Personal Mission Statement
Thanksgiving Break: Extra Credit Project
Create 3 scatterplots and show the line of best fit for each! Also, explain, in detail, the meaning of each graph!!
One should be a positive correlation, one negative, and one without a correlation!
Examples:
While you are watching the Thanksgiving Day Football Games, use some of the stats from your favorite player and compare it to the stats of the defense!
While you are eating turkey with your family, compare the time everyone eating... who takes the longest??
While driving to your families home, compare the number of commercials that come over the radio to how much time has passed.
While driving a long distance, compare the price of tolls to the distance you have driven.
While driving, compare the number of red cars to the distance driven!
Anything will work... make it relate your your break in some way!! You must be COMPARING in some way!
**Remember:
Positive: As one goes up, the other goes up!!
Negative: As one goes up, the other goes down!!
No Corr.: There is NO relationship!!
Completing the three graphs, explaining, and showing the CORRECT equation for the line of best fit for the two that don't have no correlation will earn you a 100 to replace ANY grade!
Completing the three graphs by hand, explaining, showing the CORRECT equation for the line of best fit for the two that don't have no correlation, AND use EXCEL to create a table for each, a graph for each, and show a trend line for each will earn you EITHER a 110 to replace ANY grade or two 100s to replace any grades!!
**Rough draft DUE October 9.
**Final draft DUE October 17.
Math Autobiography
Talk about your previous experiences with math classes. What classes have you taken in the past? Do you like math? Love math? Hate math? What events and/or past traumas have transpired to shape your feelings regarding math? Talk about your previous math teachers. What is the most positive memory or experience you've had with math? Least positive? What exactly do you like or dislike about math? In what kind of environment do you learn best? Why are you taking this class? Do you have any preconceived notions about algebra coming into this class? What do you expect to learn in this class? What have you heard from other students regarding this class? Give at least one example of how you have had to use math recently outside of school.
The above questions are guidelines to get you started. In general, reflect upon your past experiences in math, as one who does mathematics, one who "consumes" mathematics in daily life, and one who must communicate mathematics, as well as your associated level of confidence. Be sure to mention your possible career choices as you graduate high school. This assignment should be about 2 pages typed and will be the first entry in a four part math writing portfolio.
